The latest Jailbreak tool, Apple encryption and elephant(s) in the room.

Does the hype around hacking your own smartphone still make sense?

The Unc0ver Team just released a new jailbreak tool that unlocks every iPhone running between iOS 11.0 and iOS 13.5, allowing users to get around the many restrictions that Apple puts in place to prevent access to the underlying software.

The latest jailbreak released on Sunday 24th comes at a time where Apple is walking on hot coals because of the ongoing debate over encryption following the beef between Tim Cook and the F.B.I.

At recent press conference about the Dec 2019 Pensacola Naval Air Station shooting, Attorney General William Barr and FBI Director Chris Wray announced that after months of work, FBI technicians had succeeded in unlocking the two iPhones used by the terrorists.

Despite the F.B.I.’s attempt to shift the focus on the “Apple won’t share its tricks with us” argument, the question this immediately raised was: what exactly are the FBI’s capabilities when it comes to accessing locked, encrypted smartphones? Which third-party vendors are supplying phone-hacking solutions to the FBI?

I would like to add, in light of these recent developments, how is jailbreak still relevant? Is Apple’s reputation tarnished or are customers still more concened about UX and interface above all else?

On the MacRumors thread where users are debating whether jailbreaking iPhones “is still a thing”, emerge two main point of views:

  • YES — Jailbreaking enables users to customise as much as possible interface and accessibility of their device.
  • NOT REALLY — Jailbreaking made more sense with the earlier iOS versions when Apple significantly limited certain features and management of preferences.

Reddit has already countless threads discussing the latest jailbreak release ranging from compatibility issues, adblockers and reviews from the early adopters and possible issues of upgrading while still jailbroken.

You can download the latest jailbreak tool by the Unc0ver Team here.

According to the team website, the new features of the latest version of the controversial tool include:

  • Full-fledged support for all devices on iOS 11.0–13.5 with Cydia and tweak injection.
  • Enable unrestricted storage access to jailbreak applications for sandbox backwards compatibility while keeping security intact by leaving the security restrictions enabled for system and user applications.
  • Update Phone Rebel case models and bundled packages.
